چکیده
This paper investigates how morphological relationships between inflected word forms are represented in the mental lexicon focusing on paradigmatic relations between regularly inflected word forms and relationships between different stem forms of the same lexeme. We present results from a series of psycholinguistic experiments investigating German adjectives (which are inflected for case, number, and gender) and the so-called strong verbs of German which have different stem forms when inflected for person, number, tense or mood. Evidence from three lexical decision experiments indicates that regular affixes are stripped off from their stems for processing purposes. It will be shown that this holds for both unmarked and marked stem forms. In another set of experiments, we found priming effects between different paradigmatically related affixes and between different stem forms of the same lexeme. We will show that associative models of inflection do not capture these findings. Instead, we will explain our results in terms of combinatorial models of inflection in which regular affixes are represented in inflectional paradigms and stem variants are represented in structured lexical entries. We will also argue that the morpho-syntactic features of stems and affixes form abstract underspecified entries. The experimental results indicate that the human language processor makes use of these representations.*

We present results from cross-modal priming experiments on German participles and noun plurals. The experiments produced parallel results for both in ̄ectional systems. Regular in ̄ection exhibits full priming whereas irregularly in ̄ected word forms show only partial priming: after hearing regularly in ̄ected words (-t participles and -s plurals), lexical decision times on morphologically related ...
متن کاملWord order in sentence processing: an experimental study of verb placement in German.
We examine the question of whether the human comprehension device exhibits word-order preferences during on-line sentence comprehension. The focus is on the positioning of finite verbs and auxiliaries relative to subjects and objects in German. Results from three experiments (using self-paced reading and event-related brain potentials) show that native speakers of German prefer to process finit...
متن کاملA CHAT-Based Annotation Scheme for Case and Noun-Phrase Inflection in Child Language Data
This paper describes a coding scheme and a set of semi-automatic procedures for the annotation of complex noun phrases and their morpho-syntactic properties in child language data. These tools are based on the CHAT conventions of the Child Language Data Exchange System (MacWhinney 2000; CHILDES: http://childes.psy.cmu.edu/; CHAT: http://childes.psy.cmu.edu/manuals/chat.pdf). The coding scheme p...
متن کاملMorphologically complex words in L1 and L2 processing: Evidence from masked priming experiments in English
This paper reports results from masked priming experiments investigating regular past-tense forms and deadjectival nominalizations with -ness and -ity in adult native (L1) speakers of English and in different groups of advanced adult second language (L2) learners of English. While the L1 group showed efficient priming for both inflected and derived word forms, the L2 learners demonstrated repet...
